It would help if you could show your c:\386max\386max.pro file.
EXCLUDE=C800-D000 is possibly mispelled?? Has you ran the "max"
program?? I have noticed that sometimes after you run maximize and the
change the 386max.pro file the drivers load in the wrong places. I
start from my backup deleted the config.00* and autoexec.00* in 386max
directory and run maximize over again. Then the regions get corrected.
BTW, I am using 386Max with MicroSoft C/C++ 7.0 and the DPMI works
great. Just make sure you have over 4MB of ram installed. And also
make sure if you only have 4MB of ram you do NOT installed QCache.

Subject: Central Point Commute
Hello everyone!
I'm having an annoying (but workable) problem when dialing in to my
office to work from home. I have 2 PCs, both set up with Central
Point's Commute, over 2400 baud modems (I know - they're slow).
Without giving the exact configurations of each machine, I thought that
the following symptom might be familiar to some of you.
I'm accessing a fairly complex application that has lots of fields and
labels on the screen. The problem is that the screen does not fill in
completely, leaving out field labels and other random text. If it
wasn't for the fact that I know where everything is, I wouldn't be able
to continue.
Is this just beacuse of the slow modems? A known problem with Commute?
Something else? I'd appreciate any assistance y'all can offer!!!

Subject: Comspec vs. shell (v93 #50)
Having shell and comspec point to different command.com's is presumably
possible, but wasteful. Why would you want two copies of the same
command processor on your disk?
I can't imagine that having shell and comspec point to two unique
command processors is healthy. shell specifies what command processor
to use when booting up the system. comspec tells DOS where to look when
reloading the transient part of the processor (which is normally
removed when a program is run). Having mismatching resident and
transient parts of the processor is probably not a good idea.
Ted Wong
<u89tmw@ecs.ox.ac.uk>
[I for one can figure out why... Say you boot from a floppy, but are
connected to a network. You'd want your initial COMMAND.COM to come
from the floppy. but have your COMSPEC point to the network drive to
reduce re-loading time. gph]

>Too bad the two files required for DPMI programming have to be

I recall that Borland's DPMI support was originally based on a product
called OS/286 (of no relation to OS/2) put out by a company whose name
escapes me at the moment. Anyway, I did some programming in this
environment, a year or so before Borland started using the product.
They offered a "bind" utility which allowed you to bind the
protected-mode DPMI kernel into your application so you could
distribute a stand-alone executable. There was a royalty fee involved,
but I recall at the time it was quite reasonably priced. You might
want to ask Borland if they offer this Bind utility (it might even be
free now), if not they may be able to point you to the company where
you could buy it. Hope this helps.

Subject: Getting ZModem to work with High Speed Modem?
I'm a ProComm Plus user and successfully run a Unisys 386 in Procomm's
Host mode. The modem that runs the host is a Racal Milgo RMD3222.
When downloading files the only protocol that works is Kermit. I want
to be able to utilize the faster protocol Zmodem that Procomm supports
on my host and remote computers. The Racal Milgo modem is
V.32/V.42bis. and is running in 2-wire Hayes mode. My downloads are
from a remote at either 1200 or 2400 baud from a Hayes compatable
modem. I need desparately to be able to download files in excess of
100K without spending hours downloading both binary and text files.
Can anyone please help me? Thank you very much..

Subject: Notebook help?
Has anyone had any experience with the following NOTEBOOK computers or
their companies:
"WinBook" 486SLC/E 25 from MEI/Micro Center, Inc of 1160 Steelwood Rd
of Columbus, OH 43212.
"486 LeaderBook Pro", 486/DX-33 from PC Brand (no address, just an 800
number)
Both notebooks have monochrome displays and the trackball between the
space bar and the operator (similar to the Mac Powerbook). The WinBook
is attractively priced at $1699 + coprocessor. The PC Brand unit is
$1995 but has a smaller hard drive (80 Mb vs 120 Mb).
With mail order, it's tough to test drive. Both have a money back
guarantee, but how much hassle is it?

Subject: Parity Errors on 486 response
I own a Cumulus 486 20Mhz/SX which I bought from Sears last year. In
the AMI bios set up if I leave the Parity error check on the system
gives parity error during a reboot. I then must hit reset 5 times real
fast to get into CMOS to change this setting back to NO Parity check. I
have run memory checkers, and my software works fine...
I think Cumulus and AMI BIOS is not working together in the correct
way. Too bad Cumulus is out of business...

I recently acquired a vintage (though factory sealed) Racal Vadic (now
Racal Datacom) modem model 2400PC aka Maxwell Modem2400PC.This is an
internal 2400 baud modem (Yes it's slow, but it's all I really need
now). Setup is configured with a block of 4 dip switches and one
jumper. The manual only tells how to set to a specific com port, not
what each switch does. I need this information as the 'textbook' setup
they use in this book doesn't work in my machine. I want to be able to
change the address and irq to avoid any possible conflict. Can anyone
out htere help me.
As this is a very specific problem please feel free to respond directly

Subject: revtex 3.0
Dear Dr. Hamlin:
With great interest I learned about the possibility to submit papers
electronically to your journals. I am planning to submit a paper to
Phys.Rev.B and to Phys.Rev.Letters. I obtained the REVTEX package by
anonymous ftp from your site (by the way, the download time could be
reduced considerably if the files were archived and compressed, e.g. to
revtex30.zip, revtex30.tar.[Zz]). I have the following questions:
o File type: has the tex file to be included into the e-mail as plain
ascii or would it be possible to send an encoded, compressed archive,
and if so, would you prefer zip (version 1.1 or 2.0+ ?), unixish tar.Z,
or tar.z (with gnuzip, much better compression), and the whole archive
uuencoded or xxencoded? Note that the compressed archive bears several
advantages: considerably reduced file length, inclusion of several
(also binary) files possible (pictures?).
o Pictures: I would strongly prefer to send pictures via e-mail. Even
if they could not be incorporated directly into the production process
you could create the original pictures using a local high quality
printer. Which picture formats would be favorable (PostScript, HPGL,
one of the raster formats like TIFF, GIF, PCX)? If PostScript: is it
necessary that the PostScript file is scalable, i.e., no downloaded
pixel fonts, no raster images? If raster file format: What will be the
final size and resolution (dpi) of the pictures? Should TIFF be
compressed? I am often using pictures created by the emTeX
\special{em:...} graphics commands (and have the same high quality
fonts in the figure's labels as in the text). These are also supported
by several non-emTeX dvi drivers, e.g., dvips by T.Rokicki. Inclusion
of these pictures into the text is, of course, most easy. Would such
pictures also be acceptable?
o Does your production process rely on a pure LaTeX file or are plain
TeX commands, working well under LaTeX, also acceptable? For example, I
usually use TeX's {...\over ...} construct instead of LaTeX's
\frac{...}{...}. Does it need verbose bracing ({}) everywhere or are
TeX tokens recognized as such? Would it be possible to use \if
constructs?
o Just curious: What is the current percentage of compuscript
submissions as compared to traditional submissions? What fraction of
the compuscripts can be used for the production process without major
difficulties?
o The file template.aps does not contain a \title{...} entry.

Subject: ST 225 Setups
Recently, someone asked about getting an 286 to recognize the Segate
ST225 hard drive he had installed in the computer. He said that using
an add in controller, the drive would give an invalid reading message,
while using the built in controller caused the computer to lock
completely.
Having recently worked with these types of drives in a 386 and running
into a similar problem, here are my suggestions. First of all, I'm
pretty sure you don't want to use the built in controller. Even though
you may believe it is a MFM (and works with the ST225), it may be an
IDE (AT) controller, which from my understanding of IDE drives, means
it is expecting controlling circuitry built into the drive.
As far as setting the drive in the CMOS setup, when using a MFM drive
with a separate controller card, it may be necessary to set the drive
table to "NONE" The MFM controller takes care of the logistics of the
drive.
Disclaimer: I don't claim to be an expert on installing hard drives.
If I have anything above wrong, please feel free to correct me in a non
flaming manner. The above is based on installation of 1 MFM hard drive
in a single computer and conclusions drawn from that experience.

Subject: What is good file server setup for small office ?
My brother runs a small financial services office. He recently asked
me for advice on setting up a file server so he and his partners could
share common data files. My experience is in TCP/IP-based wide-area
networks of UNIX workstations, so I am not personally familiar with
smaller DOS PC based systems. I'd appreciate any advice from persons
experienced with these systems.
His company has about a half dozen PCs. Most are 386's, but at least
one is a 286. They run DR-DOS 6, Windows 3.1, Quicken 5, Quattro Pro,
and Word Perfect 5.1. Again, their main concern is just being able to
set up a file server so they can share some common data files. They
are not PC techies, so system admin chores should be minimized.
Any thoughts? Novell, LANtastic, Windows for Workgroups?

Noticed a reply to this problem from William Chang
(wchang@mundil.cs.mu.OZ.AU) conserning the problem of the D/D not
recognising a new disk beeing inserted.
I have had some trouble of this type from SuperStor and Stacker bacause
they can ignore this signal if they feel fit. If you do have such a
product on your running on your machine then I would read the manual
befor replacing your floppy drive.
I think you are talking of 3.5" drives as 5 1/4" drives have a system
of reading the disk each time the drive is used to see is it have been
changed.
Finally; if you do a Custom Installation of windows you might find it
crashes as it boots up windows. It should still work if you do a
Standard installaton then remove the facilities you do not require
using Setup.
